Waterproof Orthopaedic Dog Beds form a key part of our product range.
This unique and innovative mattress is over 20 cm thick. It is made up of a central layer of pocket springs sandwiched between 4 layers of deep rebound felt. This core is then wrapped in lambswool and compressed and buttoned inside a tough zipped natural cotton drill inner bag.
Like all Berkeley dog beds, our Waterproof Orthopaedic Dog Beds are designed, engineered and made by skilled craftsmen exclusively in the UK.
You probably sleep on a pocket spring mattress. They are the preferred choice for most human orthopaedic beds. Typically, in one of our Large mattresses, there are around 220 individual springs, housed in fabric pockets, all working independently of each other. This means that support is offered from the edge to the very centre of the mattress. These provide a dynamic response to the natural body movement of your dog. They react intelligently to individual body contours to cushion vulnerable exposed joints such as hips and elbows. This allows your dog the freedom to either ‘nest’ or stretch-out with ease.
Ultra-Comfy and suitable for all dog breeds, they are particularly effective for dogs suffering from arthritis, hip dysplasia, joint and ligament complaints and all elderly dogs that may require extra support and warmth.
Springs don’t break down like other materials. After 50,000 rollator cycles, visco loses 16.3% of its firmness, latex 19.4%, and polyfoam an incredible 43.7%. Compare that to pocket springs, which break down just 5.4%.
The layers of felt are designed to complement the pocket springs. This achieves just the right mix of comfort, support, durability and shape retention. Air circulates freely around this central core of springs and is pushed up through the layers of felt, wool and cotton when your dog moves around thus helping to keep the bed dry and fresh.
These layers need to be thick and dense to provide adequate insulation from cold floors. They also ensure that your dog’s body is positioned to keep his back straight and elevated to avoid drafts at ground level.
We use natural fillings wherever possible and unlike most foam and memory foam dog beds our mattresses have not been treated with potentially toxic fire retardants. (Wool is a natural fire retardant). The felt contains a high percentage of wool plus some cotton and a small percentage of polyester to provide extra ‘bounce’. Wool is a soft springy fibre that retains warmth in winter and stays cool in summer. It also has great moisture wicking properties to further help keep the core of the mattress dry
Once the two thick felt layers are in place on either side of the pocket springs we add an outer layer of lambswool. We then seal everything inside a heavy duty cotton drill cover which is buttoned to keep everything in position. If your dog is an avid scratcher this process helps avoid clumping and lumpiness.
Berkeley Waterproof Orthopaedic Dog Beds are substantially heavier than any rival product. An added benefit is that the weight of the mattress prevents it sliding around when your dog attempts to sit on it.
The standard outer cover is a 100% Waterproof PVC-backed polyester pillow case-design that is sealed with heavy duty ‘Velcro’.
We selected our waterproof material for its durability. It holds up well to chewing or scratching, dog hair tends not to stick to it and it is flea/mite, mould and mildew resistant. In addition, the heavy-duty nylon thread used in the stitching is virtually unbreakable.
You can easily remove our Waterproof Cover for machine washing at 30 degrees C or it can be left in place and simply wiped or hosed down.
Berkeley Waterproof Orthopaedic Dog Beds are available in 3 sizes and 4 colours and are an Approved Product of Canine Arthritis Management
