It can be really confusing when you go to the store to buy the best dog bed for YOUR dog. Here are a few practical (and tongue in cheek) tips that you may find useful!
1. PICK IT UP
If it’s heavy and the stuffing doesn’t all clump up or sag it may be OK. Continue to Test 2.
2. PLACE IT ON A CONCRETE FLOOR AND PUNCH IT AS HARD AS YOU CAN
It should feel firm, supportive, bouncy and offer plenty of deep insulation and support. If you end up in A&E after punching the bed it really was never going to work for you or your dog.
3. LIE ON IT
You’re really not built that differently from your pooch. If it’s comfortable and supports your joints continue to Test 4.
4. STRETCH YOUR DOG OUT FULLY ON IT
There should be at least 6″ free space all around and he shouldn’t rise up or dip in the middle. Avoid Nest beds – many are far too restrictive.
5. THROW A JUG OF WATER OVER IT
(…might be wise to ask first…) There should be an impervious barrier between your dog and the mattress filling – otherwise it’s going to get damp and smelly very quickly.
6. ASK WHERE IT’S MADE, WHO YOU CAN SPEAK TO FOR ADVICE AND IF IT HAS A GUARANTEE
China is a long way to go if you’re not happy…
